This post was written to help kind of ‘flesh-out’ a bit more whether consuming grains, even properly prepared ancient grains, is a good idea while trying to heal digestive issues. Wardeh asked me if I could address whether grains are okay to consume or not during gut healing, and why ancient grains might be better than others.
Is It Okay To Eat Grains While Healing Your Gut?
First off, let’s start by classifying grains as a starch or carbohydrate. Basically, a starch is actually chains of sugar molecules, thousands of them and if they aren’t broken down in the gut properly they cannot be absorbed. If they are not digested and absorbed properly, they will then go to the lower gastrointestinal tract or the colon, and get attacked by the microflora (or bacteria and yeast) that are down there. This can cause carbon dioxide which in turn produces gas and bloating. There are different types of starches or carbohydrates found in foods. Let’s discuss those shall we?
