Concerned About Fluoride? Reasons You Should Be.

by lydia on March 19, 2014

Due to its insatiable appetite for calcium, fluorine and fluorides likely represent a form of chemistry that is incompatible with biological tissues and organ system functions. Based on an analysis of the affects of fluoride demonstrated consistently in the literature, safe levels have not been determined nor standardized. Mounting evidence presents conflicting value to its presence in biological settings and applications. Evidence examined in this review of the literature, and specifically the recent report by the National Research Council (NRC), offer strong support for an immediate reconsideration concerning risk vs benefit. ~ Source

I grew up getting fluoride treatments at every trip to the dentist. I am sure you did too as a child of the 70’s or 80’s (and unfortunately, it’s still common practice today). My town was and still is known for it’s ‘good’ water because it has fluoride in it. Nowadays you can get toothpaste, mouthwash and vitamins all with fluoride, and it’s likely mandated to be in your local water supply. Despite all this added fluoride with the goal of preventing tooth decay, America has among one of the highest rates of tooth decay in the world. In fact, more people in the United States drink fluoridated water than the rest of the world combined. Why all the hype about fluoride? Is there even scientific evidence to prove it’s benefit?

Fluoride is any combination of elements containing the fluoride ion. In its elemental form, fluorine is a pale yellow, highly toxic and corrosive gas. In nature, fluorine is found combined with minerals as fluorides. It is the most chemically active nonmetallic element of all the elements and also has the most reactive electro-negative ion. Because of this extreme reactivity, fluorine is never found in nature as an uncombined element. (source)

Fluoride is also a waste product of the aluminum industry. It is a known poison. In concentrated form it has been used as rat poison, as a pesticide, used for de-worming pigs and delousing chickens. In humans, as little as 1/10 of an ounce will cause death. Adverse  effects of fluoride are well documented in the Physicians Desk Reference in ‘Fluoridation the Great Dilemma’.

Adverse Effects Of Fluoride

Fluoride collects in the bones. And it’s particularly likely to accumulate in the bones during periods of rapid bone growth. (source)

We observed that for males diagnosed before the age of 20 years, fluoride level in drinking water during growth was associated with an increased risk of osteosarcoma, demonstrating a peak in the odds ratios from 6 to 8 years of age. All of our models were remarkably robust in showing this effect, which coincides with the mid-childhood growth spurt.” (Bassin, et al., Cancer, Causes & Control, 2006)

  • hypothyroidism
  • decreased calcium levels
  • kidney disease
  • diabetes
  • hypoglycemia
  • hormonal imbalance
  • lowered enzyme activity
  • reduced fertility
  • birth defects
  • cancer

Those are some pretty serious effects, considering all we get as a benefit is supposed prevention of tooth decay. Which in a 1990’s study, it was proved that fluoridation does not reduce decay in permanent teeth. I would think by now we’d have found another option that actually works to prevent tooth decay, but I suspect it’s a rather big can of worms I do not want to get into. For more on toxic effects of fluoride, read this article by the Holistic Med.

Fluoride has been banned completely in Sweden, Denmark and Holland, and abandoned in Belgium and West Germany. America, however, has not budged on it’s loyalty to fluoride usage, despite the fact that it has one of the highest rates of tooth decay in the world.

50,000 cancer deaths linked to fluoridation occur yearly in America according to the National Cancer Institute. 50,000! This is no small thing. I hope that this brief post will have you concerned about the fluoride in your life, enough to take steps to get it out of your life or at least do some further research. My source for this post was ‘Water the Ultimate Cure’ by Steve Meyerowitz. Additionally, check out this post by the Weston A. Price Foundation – ‘Fluoride Worse than We Thought‘.

The biggest concern fluoride poses is our drinking water, since there are plenty of non-fluoridated dental care products out there to choose from. And don’t assume replacing your tap water with bottled water is a good solution. Bottled water is not very regulated and often is simply filtered tap water, and most filters available do not even remove fluoride. Be sure to thoroughly research when you purchase a water filtration system for your home, make sure it removes the fluoride. Carbon block filters, the most affordable common home filters, such as a Brita filter,  do not do a good job of removing fluoride. Most reverse osmosis filters do remove the fluoride as well as chlorine and other unwanted chemicals and metals. Also check out water distiller systems too, many do a great job at removing flouride as well. This chart may be helpful in determining how effective your home water filter is. Also, check out this site, Water Filter Comparisons, to aid you in picking out the appropriate water filter system for you.

Also, be sure to say no to fluoride treatments for your children at the dentist (the detriments of fluoride are much greater in children). They may look at you funny or give you grief, but be adamant. There is no outright law that you MUST have a fluoride treatment, so exercise your right to choose and say no to fluoride treatments. Read up before your next dentist visit and learn that fluoridation is not a healthful option for your child. Who knows maybe you can even educate your dentist or hygienist on the subject. When I found my latest pediatric dentist, I spoke at length with his hygienist. My main goal was to state up front what I did and didn’t want from my dentist and that I wanted him to be open minded to me declining fluoride treatments. Each visit, I remind the dentist that I don’t want the fluoride treatment. The last time, he told me that I had made it abundantly clear, but that it’s my choice. That is all I ask -that I be allowed to make the choices I feel are right for my family. We can agree to disagree. If I could find and afford a more holistic dentist I certainly would go that route. However, not all of us will be fortunate enough to find such a dentist.

I hope this post has helped create awareness of the severity of this issue of fluoride in our water, as well as dental products. It’s no small matter and every thing you can do towards removing fluoride will impact your health for the better. Hopefully you too, can spread awareness and make some changes in regards to getting the fluoride out of your life and others! Sources on the Adverse Effects of Fluoride

Fluoride is the extreme electron scavenger, the most corrosive of all elements, as well as the most-reactive. Fluoride appears to attack living tissues, via several mechanisms. Fluoride renders strong evidence that it is a non-biological chemical, demonstrating no observed beneficial function or role in organic chemistry, beyond use as a pesticide or insecticide. ~ Source

I thought I just saw something about the ADA no longer recommending flouride? Never having challenged my doctors full on, I’d love to have something from a mainstream organization in case my dentist questions my choice.

We avoid it all! Nasty stuff.

So when you say those countries have banned fluoride…that means none in the water, no treatments at the dentist, none in toothpaste? Do you have any reference links for that out of curiosity (I know, I could look myself!).

i think you are very smart and you are 100% right your a very smart person we need more people like you in this world to discuss more about the fluoride. Thanks

Fluoride is dangerous to health, causing damage to glands, brains, bones, kidneys, and more.
This database  makes the science on fluoride toxicity more readily available than ever before. Inspect these scientific studies and you will understand.
Features of the Study-Tracker include:
•    Over 1,500 abstracts and over 400 full-text studies. 845 studies since 2000, including 181 studies since 2013.
•    Filters that enable 80+ years of research to be organized by health category/subcategory, study type, and date. •    237 studies on the brain, including 95 studies on cognitive function.

I knew a lot of this but it is still angering. I know part of the reason why I have thyroid issues as an adult is because I had fluoride treatements every time at the dentist. Thankfully I knew better when I had kids and they haven’t had any. Even if it was a law I still wouldn’t put that poison in my body. I personally don’t believe it is necessary to see the dentist every year or six months anyway. Thank you for the great info and links!

Thanks for this well researched post. I always tell people every mother is a product of their experiences, and every mother is crazy in their own way. I am crazy about chemicals in the products my kids use, most especially fluoride, because of my own experiences- my brother died at 18 from osteosarcoma. We were absolutely inundated with fluoride as children- we got the treatments at school, we took fluoride vitamins (which I’m sure the pediatrician recommended because we were on rural water, so at least THAT was fluoride free), and we got it at every trip to the dentist. When my own children were born the doctor recommended a liquid vitamin that contained fluoride- I hadn’t even done my research yet, but something inside me told me to politely decline. Then, not long after, I got an email that I believe was from the Environmental Working Group about the link between fluoride and bone cancer, particularly osteosarcoma. Ever since then I’ve been super aware.

I am very sorry to learn about your brother’s death from osteosarcoma (bone cancer).
We were warned in a 2006 study by Dr. Elise Bassin, DDS, Harvard University, published in a cancer journal,  Cancer Causes Control. May  2006. It shows a fivefold increase in bone cancer in young people who have consumed fluoride in their drinking water.
Medical professionals should be ashamed to support such a crude and unethical practice as fluoride which results in cancer, thyroid & pineal gland damage, lowered IQ, kidney disease, arthritis and other serious health problems.

As a 1st time mom, i faithfully gave my now 16yo her flouride drops everyday when she was a toddler as recommended for those with well water…as a result, she has permanent white blotchy she hated the taste, so I put them ib het morning o.j. just to make sure she recieved them. Unfortunately today, she gas permant white stains on her teeth in which she’s very self conciounce of. We cannot whiten her teeth because the stains will only whiten more as we were tokd by our dentist. If I could do it over again knowing what I know today, I would’ve laughed at the doc and politely refused…
