Today, I’ve got another health success story to share with you. It comes from Samantha of Sweet Potatoes and Social Change. She took on the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol to recover from ulcerative colitis.
Hello wonderful readers! My name is Samantha and about three years ago I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation in the lower digestive tract, pain, blood loss, fatigue, severe weight fluctuation and increased risk of colon cancer. Upon being diagnosed, I followed the doctor’s instructions, went on medication and was able to achieve remission.
However, I was still left with a number of uncomfortable digestive ailments such as severe bloating, painful bowel movements and abdominal pain. It was then that I decided to go gluten free. My sister had gone gluten-free a year or so before to help relieve some of her digestive ailments, so I thought it may help. Some of my symptoms improved, but many remained. Not long after, I was introduced to the paleo diet and I was hooked. I had spent my entire life feeling as though I was fighting with my body; everything from controlling my acne, to managing my allergies, to going to the bathroom was difficult. I thought that maybe if I started giving my body what it needed, the real nourishing food that it was designed to digest, my body would start working with me.
My health improved exponentially on the paleo diet, and for well over a year my disease was in remission, my weight stabilized, my energy level increased and I was on top of the world. However, as it tends to do, life began to change and after months of prolonged stress, my disease began to flare again and I was left almost bedridden. After six months of pain and blood loss I decided to give diet one last ditch effort and try this paleo diet subset I had heard about called the Autoimmune Protocol or AIP. The limitations seemed strict, but I was desperate. Within three weeks my bleeding stopped. Slowly, my energy returned and I was able to get back to my life. After a few months even my weight began to stabilize and I was able to avoid going on intravenous medications. Food had given me my life back yet again.
This is where I am now. It has taken some time and practice but now, following the autoimmune protocol is very manageable, the food is delicious and every bite gets me closer to achieving long-term health and wellness.
