Are you interested in a tip on how to rebuild energy levels and to support and build deep immune strength? If so, today is your lucky day as I’m sharing a simple ingredient you can start to incorporate into your diet right now to obtain those benefits.

Want to hear more? Watch the video below and check out the recipes and insights that follow!

Years ago, I was under some pretty hefty stress. On a visit to my local herbalist I learned of a simple ingredient I could use to help support my body and boost my immune system. Astragalus root.

My herbalist gave me a small baggie of this one herb and told me to put it into every batch of bone broth I made and sip daily to help me recover. I did that very thing for many weeks after and started to really feel my vitality coming back (I also did not get sick at all that winter).  I now always add it to my broth because it’s as easy as pie to do and one big bag of it lasts awhile.

Turns out this tonic herb touts a number of benefits that just about anyone could stand to gain from. The good news is, it’s affordable and easy to have on hand. You can also use it to make a nice tea out of as it has a nice sweetness to it.

Learn more about what this tonic herb has to offer you.

How To Use Astragalus

Boost Your Immune System

I buy my astragalus in root form, they kind of look like tongue depressors don’t they? The root should have a creamy color with a slight yellow center. (see image above)

As a Tea

Simply steep 1-2 slices in a quart of water. First bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and let the liquid reduce down a bit. 30 minutes to an hour. Drink as a tea – should not need sweetener as it already has a sweet taste of it’s own.

In Bone Broth

Simply add two or three root slices to a batch of broth and simmer several hours. For a larger batch, add 4-5 slices.

Where to Find Astragalus

I get all my herbs through Mountain Rose Herbs. I’ve tried both Frontier and Star West Botanicals through Amazon and still much prefer Mountain Rose Herbs, they’ve shown to have the best quality of the 3 so far hands down.

Hi Lydia,
Thank you for your post on astragalus! A couple months ago, I purchased astragalus in powder form and I’m wondering what I can do with it!! At first I thought I’d put it in my green smoothie, but, I’m thinking better of that–my green smoothie is green-tasting enough…. Any ideas? put in capsule?

Hi Teri,

I think capsules might be your best best – but I really can’t say how beneficial the powder will be since it is not getting infused into anything like a tea or soup. You could try putting it into a little cheesecloth (a couple layers) so you can make tea or add some to your stock.

I am nursing a 5 month old and plan on continuing until he is 24months. Is the root safe to take while nursing? Really need to heal my gut and boost my immune system badly! Thank you kindly!

Alas it is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Broth is great alone too though!
